The Bishop is a beautiful bird hailing primarily from South Africa. Fortunately for us, there’s an aptly named red sub species as close as Puerto Rico and the same last name of Todd Bishop; committed waterman and designer/owner of Bishop Boards. Based in St Augustine, FL, Todd has a never ending array of waves and flats to draw motivation for his board designs.
Talking with Todd this last week, h2ostoked got the rundown on a truly home grown SUP company. After Todd got hooked on paddle boarding, he found himself forced to compromise on the right combination of performance, price, and design. More importantly, “I was having a hard time finding boards that my wife enjoyed.” With a solid history of riding and paddling, Todd hit the CAD and started designing boards that fit his and his better half’s demands. The result is a ride that would challenge you to hold back a smile.
Currently there are over 20 styles in Bishop’s line up. Specific models for surfing, racing, and a healthy mix for the casual, heavy, light, yoga, fishing, flat water types. What’s unusual and unique, is the quality of construction throughout the line. Real bamboo inlays, that foster sustainability and decrease weight because bamboo doesn’t absorb resin. Carbon fiber rails for ride and durability. Vacuum bag construction = lighter and stronger. All boards are hand finished and polished. You can see the attention to detail. True weights with the pad Even an ergonomic carry handle – you’ll feel the difference.
It gets better. 1% of all sales are donated to non profits that benefit the environment. According to Todd, one Bishop board sold plants 24 trees. He strives to donate to organizations with minimal administrative costs so the funds have a direct impact. Furthermore, every new board includes a Bishop combo pack. You’ll get a 5 fin selection, fin key, sticker, ACA membership, leash cord, and great karma from all the trees planted.
