We got the invite for the Flying Fish Summer Paddle Challenge in Jensen Beach, FL. And a promise of a venue like no other. This is one promise that was definitely kept. When we rolled up to the River Palm Cottages And Fish Camp on the Indian River Lagoon in Stuart, FL, we strolled past hammocks in the palms, exotic and edible plants, happy and welcomed doggies, vintage 50’s updated lodging, and over a 100 boards and boats on the private beach.
John Meskauskas, race coordinator and owner of Flying Fish Paddle Sports, met us under an incredible Seminole Chickee Hut to gush enthusiasm. “There wasn’t much happening in this area for paddle sports which didn’t match my love for racing. Now we host a spring and summer SUP race each year, have added surf skis and outriggers, and had our biggest turnout to date. Our goal is to promote physical and emotional well being, and nothing quite does that like being on the water.”
John aint lying. He knew most of the racers by name, attracted participants from the entire state, and was in the thick of every race. A dedicated fleet of volunteers ensured a smooth running event, and the vibe was decidedly chill. As John puts it, “this is a labor of love for the sport, people, and community. I just hope you’ll share the stoke of this awesome activity.”
No worries John, that’s what we’re all about.
