We’ve been waiting to cover a skim board event since the get go. When the call came from Steve Pullara, skimboard legend, owner of Run Drop Slide, and event coordinator for the 22nd consecutive year, we grabbed our toys and hit the road.
The Florida Skim Boarding Pro Am is one of the top skim board contests in North America. With over 200 participants and 30+ national and international pros, it’s a true standout among beach events. Held at Florida’s Vilano Beach, just a barrier island away from St Augustine, it was standing room only. Even for the kids events.
Haven’t been to a Skim Board contest? Think beach sprints, wave interpretation, skate tricks, surfing, massive air, “Uber” long rides, and non stop smiles from riders and fans. Now in all fairness, we were expecting some youthful “tude,” ego, and scrappy indifference. Reality slap! This was a family event and collaboration was the tone of the day. Pros volunteered to judge all amateurs. Handshakes and embraces were the norm before and after heats. When a competitor cranked an awesome run, boards were pounded in appreciation.
Looking for a sport with maximum stoke for almost any beach? A vibe that just might epitomize beach sports and culture. A cross-train that builds power, coordination, and stick-to-it-ness. Look no further than your local skim board shop.
See you on the sand.
